A short description of my work.
In
most of my work one can generally find an element
of negotiation, contestation and/or rejection of the
idea of space as neutral and objective. I have worked
with logics, structures and narratives of space as
well as in space, trying to investigate how space is
always a specific construction, but one based on very
general assumptions about who we are and how we understand
each other. In that way I try to investigate and address
how certain spatial organizations produce and influence
identity, behaviour and socialization. -I.e. how space
itself is produced: by ideological, social and cultural
agendas as well as by economic agendas and everyday
practices of the individual. This involves not only
an interest in architecture and urban planning, but
also very much an interest in theories about language
and psychology: Very much like language, space - or
certain spatial logics - are structuring our way of
understanding ourselves, our bodies and our presence.
This understanding mostly involves the use of narrational
elements. Thus, architecture is an important element
in my works, but always along with research into and
stories about social and psychological implications.
There is never only a space; there is always also a
body related to it. The idea of the body and space
understood as language leads me directly to the attempt
to bring about an understanding of not only our physical,
but also indeed our gendered involvement in space.
I relation to discussions of gender and space I have
especially been involved in how commercial spaces more
and more often try to mimic traditional public spaces,
translating "a citizen"; into "a consumer".
In these spaces we are no longer addressed as political
subjects, and our validity in relation to power structures
depends only on what money we spend and how.
