Education program for the Master Programme in Fine Arts, 120 points
Master of Fine Arts
Department: Fine Arts
Subject: Fine Arts
Level: The programme leads to a Master’s degree in Fine Arts

 Establishment
The programme was established by the Vice-Chancellor on 15 11 2005. The education plan was approved by the Faculty of Arts on 2 Nov 2005.

 Goals and contents
Focus: The Master programme provides advanced and specialised experience and skills in artistic work, theory and techniques with a focus on investigative artistic development.

The education will provide more depth and continued studies to complement the Bachelor programme. The bachelor programme covers the following:

A broad orientation and deeper understanding of contemporary art's practitioners, methods and impact.

The theoretical and practical skills to allow students to express and formulate their artistic work and unique characteristics in various media.

The ability to reflect over students’ own artistic work in both written and oral form through encouragement and constructive critique.

An understanding in contemporary theory and art history.

The ability to critically analyse cultural ideas and contexts in which they exist and inspire and debate issues related to art or subjects that are of interest for art.

The opportunity to examine and explore relevant institutions, organisations and environments for art, such as art biennials and museums, and discussions on production, distribution, consumption and documentation of contemporary art locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

The education is to also be designed so that the teaching includes ethnic and cultural diversity and a gender perspective.

The following applies for the Master’s programme:

To a greater degree than the bachelor’s programme, students will:

Be responsible for their artistic work.

Take initiatives for discussions and debates and be able to argue for and present ideas.

Summary: The focus is on strengthening the students’ skills in developing, formulating, organising, promoting, evaluating, presenting and communicating their own investigative artistic development and practicing analysis of their own field’s methods and framework of knowledge from art and/or other fields.

 Programme design
The education is internationally focused with many guest teachers from abroad and is aimed at students who want to work professionally as artists in Sweden or abroad or in fields in society where artistic knowledge and research are of importance. All students will have access to a studio during their studies.

Tuition consists of project work (individually and in groups), guidance (individually and in groups), lectures, seminars, courses and field studies.

For students who have not taken the introductory courses in the Bachelor programme which give access to the workshops, courses will be provided.

Courses in artistic work, theory and techniques and workshops are offered from an extensive course catalogue. The course catalogue is also available on the web and is regularly updated. Students can take 15 points of electives per year among the courses in the catalogue, which means that their own artistic work is equivalent to 25 points per academic year. Students are therefore expected to establish their own course curricula together with their supervisors.

The students’ own artistic work, compared to the Bachelor programme, is to show a clear progression.

Required work for Master’s studies

- An artistic work focused on investigative artistic development (30 points)

- A cooperative project based on artistic work (5 points)

- A written assignment that relates to the student’s own artistic applications and its methods. The student’s texts are continually discussed in seminars under the guidance of the supervisor and together with the student group.

- Regular discussions with the supervisor on the student’s own artistic work. These artistic works are continually discussed in seminars under the guidance of the supervisor and together with the student group.

- Public presentations of artistic works on at least two occasions during the study period.

 Prerequisites
A successfully completed Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts or its equivalent. Artistic skills as judged through documentation of investigative artistic development. Samples (12 pictures or equivalent) and a project plan for the first and second terms that shows the applicant’s artistic ambitions.

A jury selects from the pool of qualified applicants. After an initial selection process that uses documentation of artistic work, a group of applicants will be called to take part in interviews and approximately 12 of these will be accepted. Applicants from the EU and outside the EU are interviewed over the phone.

A guaranteed spot to the Master’s programme is given to students at the Academy of Fine Arts, Umeå University during a transitional period of four years. These applicants must also submit the above project plan for the first and second terms.

 Examination

The examination takes place in the fourth term and consists of:

- Presentation of exam work - an artistic work with a focus on investigative artistic development (30 points).

- Documentation of exam work – photographs, video or other documentation appropriate for the format of the artistic work.

- Oral presentation of exam work – a 30-minute lecture.

- Written presentation of exam work - a reflective text based on the artistic work (max 4000 characters).

The oral and written presentations are to contain an analysis of the work’s background and context and a discussion of the method, application and references of the work within and outside the work’s field.

The exam work is presented for the student group, supervisor, instructor and external examiner, who evaluates the work. In the evaluation, emphasis is placed on the effort and results, the knowledge and skills, its independence, insight and critical reflection, and the presentation as a whole.

Compared with the exam work at the Bachelor level, the Master’s exam work must also show a significant level of specialisation and independence.

Students will be marked with either pass or fail.
