CMF was
established in 1987 by the Swedish government to support the environmental
research in Umeå. Ever since CMF has initiated and promoted a large number of
successful research projects. Most of the projects have resulted in PhD theses,
spin offs in new and innovative projects, and continued cooperation between the
parties.
The work
of CMF has been nationally evaluated twice. The last evaluation performed in
1998 aimed at reviewing the relevance in terms of the environment aspects in
those projects that were or had been supported by CMF, and to scrutinize
whether CMF as an organisation had fulfilled its obligations in accordance to
the decree CMF. The evaluation result has been summarized in a rapport by the
evaluation board.
By 2011 a more than 100 projects had been supported
by CMF by an amount about 120 million crowns (SEK). By now (2011) nearly 60 PhD
theses have been presented.
For 2012 the budget for CMF is about 9 million
crowns. At this moment 20 projects (19 doctoral students) are supported by CMF grants.
Of these projects 2 are expected to be finished this year and the PhD students
will perform their dissertations. Two of the projects have recently been
launched, and are planned to be going on for 4-5 years. Each year 2-4 new
projects are launched with economical support from CMF.
