A bibliometric view of Scientometrics

by Olle Persson, Inforsk

At this site a series of bibliometric maps based on papers in Scientometrics will appear. They are all based on 1062 papers published in vol 1:1978 to vol 44:1999 and the records were retrieved from SSCI using the Web of Science interface. Please note, that I have not corrected the file for spelling variants of author names or cited author names.

High impact papers
The Web of Science has a "times cited" field in each record. This is the number of citations a paper has received from the whole SSCI.
These are the ten most cited papers:

88 Schubert A; Glanzel W; Braun T Scientometric Datafiles - A ComprehensiveSet of Indicators on 2649 Journals and 96 Countries in All Major ScienceFields and Subfields 1981-1985 Scientometrics 1989 V16 P3

The paper and books most cited by Scientometrics
Looking at the documents that Scientometrics cite we find another list of high impact papers as well as their relations in the map below. The knowledgeable reader will locate some themes, for example reesearch on bibliometric distributions(top left), studies of research collaboration (bottom) etc.

Direct citation links among the authors
The papers in Scientomerics cite each other. Once we have identified such direct citation links we can go from paper citing to author citing, and also exclude author self citations. Note that circles are proportional to the number of citations the authors have received from the other authors of Scientometrics. The line thickness is proportional to the number of citations between a pair of authors.

The dominance of the ISSRU, a Hungarian group is quite obvious. We can also quite easily identify the CWTS-group at Leiden.

Similarity of citation behaviour
If authors cite each other they probably also cite the same literature. This map shows the closeness of authors in terms of shared cited references.

Direct citation links among countries
If we look at  countries citing each other, USA is at the center and Hungary is second. The country links includes all papers and authors, while the author map above is limited to the most cited authors. So, USA dominates by having many more cited authors than Hungary.

Where does Scientometrics place itself on the journal market?
The journal co-citation map shows which journals Scientometrics is related to via its own citation behaviour.
