PhD student positions

Two PhD student positions in the subject of in the subject of Medical Science with an orientation towards Medical Biochemistry at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics.

The Faculty of Medicine is one of four faculties of Umeå University. The faculty is an organization for education and research in the fields of medicine, dentistry and health care. It is comprised of 13 departments, 2 research centres and 12 academic programmes. Within the faculty there are approximately 3 000 undergraduate and 500 graduate students, and 1 000 employees including 500 teachers/ researchers.

Description of project: Signal transduction and biochemistry studies in the mammalian ovary.The mammalian ovary is a heterogenous organ consisting of follicles and corpora lutea at various stages of development. The main functions of the ovary are to produce fertilizable ova and steroidogenesis. Many pathological processes take place in the ovary, causing ovarian cancers and female infertility. Our research focuses on the identification of signals and molecules that contribute to the physiological and pathological changes of the ovary.

To qualify for the positions, a Bachelor university degree in biochemistry, cell biology, or molecular biology, typically with a minimum of 240 ECTS (or equivalent). Knowledge in signal transduction and mammalian ovaries including zygote development is also required. Knowledge in gene targeting techniques is required. Previous experience of working with transgenic mice is required.

In order to be accepted to postgraduate education, it is required that the applicant has the following: Necessary knowledge from University higher education or corresponding education. Necessary English language skills, both in writing and in speaking
