Five Doctoral students in Business Administration

Umeå School of Business at Umeå University conducts education and research in five strategic areas of business administration: entrepreneurship, management, marketing, and accounting and finance. We have also gathered research from these areas into two strong profile areas: Sustainable Development and Projects, and Innovation and Networks. With a total enrolment of approximately 1,800 students, we offer six Master's programs, four bachelor's programs, a diploma program and single-subject courses.


We are now recruiting to our PhD program in the areas of entrepreneurship and innovation, finance, accounting, management and marketing.


1. Doctoral student in business administration with a specialization in entrepreneurship and innovation. Ref. No: 313-297-11


In entrepreneurship, researchers at Umeå School of Business study entrepreneurial activities and dynamic business development on regional, national and international levels. We are now announcing a doctoral position in the area "networking and innovation", which is a part of the school's research profile Projects, Innovation and Networks. The candidate is expected to conduct research on innovation, for example on the role inter-organizational relationships and networks play in innovation work, innovation and internationalization, or distributed networks and innovation systems. The specific focus of the thesis is formulated in consultation with the supervisor.

2. Doctoral student in business administration with a specialization in finance. Ref. No: 313-298-11


Our research in finance deals among other things with entrepreneurial finance, credit and risk management, portfolio management and sustainable investments. We prefer that you have a research interest in line with these topics, but we are also open to other interesting research directions. The specific focus of the thesis is formulated in consultation with the supervisor.

3. Doctoral student in business administration with a specialization in accounting. Ref. No: 313-299-11


Within accounting, research is currently conducted in a series of different areas such as sustainable reporting, financial accounting, auditing and internal control. The doctoral student is expected to conduct research within financial accounting, auditing or internal control. The specific focus of the thesis is formulated in consultation with the supervisor.

The management section primarily conducts research in the areas of corporate responsibility and the role of corporations in society, project organization, innovation, diversity, identity construction, and boundary spanning organizing. We prefer that you have a research interest in line with these topics, but we are also open to other interesting research directions. The specific focus of the thesis is formulated in consultation with the supervisor.

Currently, our research in marketing primarily focuses on consumption and consumer behavior, service marketing, innovation and product development, and sustainability and environmental issues viewed from a marketing perspective. We prefer that you have a research interest in line with these topics, but we are also open to other interesting research directions. The specific focus of the thesis is formulated in consultation with the supervisor.

Eligibility requirements and assessment criteria

A requirement for employment as a PhD student is admission to doctoral studies in Business Administration. Those considered to possess basic eligibility are students who hold an advanced degree or have completed studies equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, at least 60 of which have been completed at an advanced level, or students who in some other manner, whether within or outside of Sweden, have acquired skills which are basically equivalent to this requirement. A student who obtained the qualifications necessary to satisfy the requirements of basic eligibility for admission to a doctoral program prior to 1 July 2007, i.e. basic undergraduate level education equivalent to 120 higher education credits or equivalent qualifications obtained by some other means, either within or outside of Sweden, will be considered to meet basic eligibility for admission to doctoral-level studies, though only until the end of June 2015 (The Higher Education Ordinance (HF), Ch. 12 §11). In addition to basic eligibility, the applicant must have satisfactorily undertaken courses within Business Administration equivalent to at least 90 higher education credits, including an independent work (thesis/equiv.) worth at least 15 credits.

 

In addition, the Higher Education Ordinance (2006:1053) requires that the applicant is considered to have ability to benefit from the doctoral-level education they will receive.

 

For the present position additional requirements are good analytical ability and good ability to communicate orally as well as in writing, both in Swedish and in English. Students who lack such ability in Swedish are expected to have gained it within two years.

1. CV/résumé.
2. Copies of grades and degree certificates proving that you meet the eligibility criteria.
3. A personal letter with description of why you are interested in our post-graduate programme and what your expectations and ambitions would be as participant in our organisation. The latter includes your possible interest in teaching and other duties (approximately 2 pages).
4. A short description of your primary research interest, i.e. what you want to focus on during your doctoral studies (at least 2 pages).
5. A copy of your thesis/degree project indicating your ability to do scholarly work. If your thesis/degree project was co-authored, we also ask you to submit a sample of an individual written assignment form your education. If the degree project is written in Swedish, we also want a sample of your ability to express yourself in writing in English (for example through an individual paper from your university degree or a work sample, and grades from high school level).

Further information
Doctoral studies comprise four years full time studies (240 ECTS). Normally, employment as a doctoral student consists of 80 percent doctoral studies and 20 percent teaching, and hence the employment usually lasts five years. Teaching takes place at Umeå School of Business undergraduate programs and courses, and related subject areas. You are also expected to take part in joint activities at the Business School.
