Five PhD student positions
in Sociology

The Department of Sociology offers a stimulating and intellectual environment with good career opportunities. The department carries on extensive research and emphasizes a work climate that enhances intellectual development.

To qualify for any of the positions you must have a degree awarded at the advanced level or have completed studies of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits were awarded at the advanced level, or have completed a corresponding programme in some other country or have equivalent qualifications. In addition you need 90 higher education credits in Sociology and 60 higher education credits in Sociology at the advanced level.

The five positions are related to different research programmes at the department. See the link for further description of the content and direction of those programmes.

Forskarutbildning i biblioteks- och informationsvetenskap bedrivs vid sociologiska institutionen, Umeå universitet. Forskningen är inriktad mot området vetenskaplig information och har en särskilt stark handledarkompetens inom delområdet bibliometri och kunskapsorganisation, se vidare www.umu.se/inforsk/

3. Xenophobia and nationalism

The PhD student is relatively free to formulate her own problem around xenophobia and/or nationalism and adjacent areas of research. Possible focus is for example, explaining differences in xenophobia across countries or other geographical entities, how different forms of national identity in various countries effect the willingness to contribute to common goods, how different educational environments effect xenophobia or prejudice amongst adolescents, what consequences a developing European identity have and so on. The analyses are expected to be based on existing international survey data like the European Social Survey, the International Social Survey programme, the Eurobarometer etc, and/or existing national surveys.

4. Childhood and lifelong welfare

This is an opportunity for students interested in the link between family, neighbourhoods, environment and welfare outcomes.  The PhD-student position is linked to the research programme ”Microdata research on childhood for lifelong health and welfare“ in which you will have the opportunity to work in a interdisciplinary research team, consisting of researchers and PhD-students from both social and medical sciences. The focus in the research programme is placed on the importance of childhood for lifelong health and welfare. As a PhD-student you will have the opportunity to study questions such as how family structure and resources influence children’s welfare outcomes and how changing preconditions on the labour market influence families everyday life, and in turn children’s life courses. You are expected to perform statistical analyses using different micro data resources available at Umeå University.

5. Education and welfare in transitions into adulthood

This PhD-position is an opportunity for students with an interest in youth and their transitions into adulthood. The project bases itself on quantitative micro data and focuses on how education systems and youth characteristics interact to shape young people’s capabilities and early life courses. Issues that can be analyzed include among other things identifying young people at risk, investigating how school characteristics, training and transfers function as a mediator for the realization of youth capabilities and identifying successful routes to adulthood for young people at risk. The PhD-student position is part of the EU-funded Marie Curie Initial Training Network “Education as Welfare - Enhancing opportunities for socially vulnerable youth in Europe” which involves PhD-students and researchers from nine European countries. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work within an international and interdisciplinary framework where she/he will also spend an extended period of her/his PhD studies at the University of Pavia in Italy.
