Reference number: 313-481-09
Umeå University is seeking outstanding candidates for a PhD student position in computer science with a focus on knowledge-based systems applied to health care at the Department of Computing Science. The Cognitive Computing Group at the department conducts research at the intersection of AI and HCI with emphasis on interaction with knowledge-based systems. Topics like multi-initiative systems, intelligent user interfaces, ubiquitous computing, ambient assisted living, argumentation and semantic web techniques are central.
The current position is aimed to strengthen and broaden the research that is currently focusing on the design and analysis of methods, algorithms and software for decision-support in complex knowledge domains that promote development of users’ knowledge and skills. Research topics include knowledge assessment, formalisation and visualisation of complex reasoning processes in the health domain. The position will be partly funded by Swedish Brain Power and includes collaboration with our national and international academic, industrial and healthcare providing partners.
The position is aimed for PhD studies and research leading to a PhD exam. The position includes a competitive salary for a period of four years research time, provided that expected study and research results are achieved. The position may also include part-time teaching (normally up to 20%). If so, the total time for the position is extended accordingly (up to maximum five years).
Successful candidates should preferably have earned an MSc degree or similar in computer science or some other field relevant for the position. The minimum formal requirement is four years of completed full-time studies. In addition to excellent study results, solid programming skills are required. Experience from health care is also considered highly valuable. Additional personal qualifications necessary in the multi-disciplinary projects are the ability to collaborate with people with different backgrounds and excellent skills in organizing and completing work tasks within time limits. Good communication skills in written and spoken English are required and skills in Swedish are a bonus. In order to address the uneven distribution of gender at the department, female candidates are encouraged to apply for the position.
