Our campus constitutes an inspiring environment for everyone that studies and works here. We wish to co-operate with companies and organisations throughout the Umeå region and all over the world.

PhD Student position
in Mathematics: Combinatorics and Computational Complexity

The graduate student will be working on a project aimed at finding optimal algorithms for linear transformations by using methods from constraint solving, algebraic geometry and computational combinatorics. These algorithms have traditionally been found purely by human ingenuity but in the present project our goal is instead  to use computers to construct efficient algorithms.

The project borders between mathematics and computer science and the student will develop skills in both areas of research. The research project will involve studies in pure mathematics as well as implementation of algorithms and computational tasks.

Prerequisites include either i) 240 ECTS-credits (swe. högskolepoäng) of higher education studies of which 60 should be on an advanced level (Master level), or ii) 120 Swedish (old) credits (swe. poäng; corresponding to 180 ECTS-credits of these) of higher education studies if they were taken before July 1, 2007. In addition to these general requirements, 120 ECTS credits need to be in mathematics.

The graduate student will be working at the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics.  Since we strive for a more equal gender distribution within our department, we especially encourage female applicants.
