Our campus constitutes an inspiring environment for everyone that studies and works here. We wish to co-operate with companies and organisations throughout the Umeå region and all over the world.
PhD fellowships
in the laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS) at Umeå University
MIMS is seeking outstanding candidates in the subject of Medical Science with an orientation towards Molecular Biology, and up to three fellowships are available at the Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS), Umeå University, Sweden.
The laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine (MIMS, www.mims.se) was established in 2007 as a partner institution of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (www.embl.org) together with the new Nordic nodes for molecular medicine in Finland and Norway. The aim of MIMS is to strengthen Swedish research and enhance the dynamics in the field of molecular medicine, partly by promoting the career opportunities for young scientists. MIMS is established within the Umeå Centre for Microbial Research (UCMR, www.ucmr.se) that includes researchers active in the fields of molecular and clinical microbiology, molecular biology, chemistry and physics and is closely connected to the university hospital.
The fellowships are available in the areas of “RNA-mediated virulence regulation” (group J. Johansson, jorgen.johansson@molbiol.umu.se), “dNTPs as cellular regulators” (group A Chabes, andrei.chabes@medchem.umu.se) and “Clp-mediated proteolysis in gram-positive bacterial pathogens”. (group E. Charpentier, emmanuelle.charpentier@mims.umu.se). More information can be found on MIMS home page under the respective research groups www.mims.se/groups.html or by contacting the respective group leader directly.
The recruitment procedure will follow the Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen chapters 5 and 7). Prerequisites at time of registration as PhD-student include either i) 240 ECTS credits (swe. högskolepoäng) of higher education studies of which 60 should be on an advanced level within Molecular biology, Biochemistry, bioengineering and/or Microbiology, or ii) 120 Swedish (old) credits (swe. poäng; corresponding to 180 ECTS-credits) of higher education studies if they were taken before July 1, 2007 or equivalent competence. This is equivalent to a European University Master degree. Applicants should have a high interest in the field of molecular biology, especially infection biology, and be willing to take on a scientific and technical challenge. Prior hands-on experience in molecular biology and microbiology is highly desirable. The candidate needs to be skilled in both oral and written communication in English, be able to work independently and self-motivated, as well as in collaboration with others.
The application should include:
1) A signed letter of application describing your research interests (no more than one A4 page). 2) CV, including a list of university courses with grades.
3) Names, with contact details and e-mail addresses of two to three academic references.
4) Other relevant documentation you wish to include in support of your application.
The fellowship will be covered by a postgraduate student allowance (“utbildningsbidrag”) for the first two years and the salary successively increases according to a stipulated scale in the last two years of the PhD position (“doktorandtjänst”). The position may require teaching up to 20% which will increase the total time of the position up to maximum five years.
