Research Positions in Grid and Cloud Computing
- Post-doc researcher, PhD students, and Systems developers

Umeå University, Department of Computing Science, is seeking outstanding candidates for 1 post-doc position, 3 PhD student positions, and 2 systems developer positions within the fields of Grid and Cloud Computing. The positions are aimed to strengthen and broaden the current research group for Grid and Cloud Computing.

The group’s research is focused on the design and analysis of methods, algorithms and software for service-oriented grid and cloud infrastructures. Current and planned research topics include systems architecture design, resource brokering, scheduling, cloud infrastructure elasticity, distributed monitoring and accounting, job and workflow management, efficient use of virtualization techniques, cloud storage, as well as grid and cloud application development, e.g., in eScience application areas. See www.gird.se for an overview of ongoing projects. The current positions are aimed to strengthen the group’s research in these areas and to broaden the research scope. For an additional posting of two post-doc stipends, see www.umu.se/english/about-umu/news-events/grants/223-803-10

The research is performed within large-scale national and international projects, including EU FP7 funded projects in close collaboration with major industrial and academic partners. Software is contributed to various open source community efforts including NorduGrid/ARC and the Globus Toolkit, the latter as a member of the Globus Academic Affiliate Program. The group is also a member of the NESSI workgroup on service-oriented infrastructure.

The research is performed in close collaboration with the High Performance Computing Center North (HPC2N) and the UMIT research laboratory at Umeå University. HPC2N is a member center of the Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC), providing competence and computing resources, including grid resources. HPC2N actively takes part in Swegrid, NDGF, NorduGrid and EGEE. UMIT is an environment under build-up for interdisciplinary research in scientific, high-performance, distributed, real-time, and visual computing.

1 Post-doctoral researcher
Dnr: 315-246-10

The position is aimed for post-doctoral research to be performed jointly with senior researchers and PhD students in our group, and with our collaboration partners. Coordination tasks within large-scale projects may also be included. The position is for two years and comes with a competitive salary.

Applicants should have earned a PhD in Computer Science or a related field relevant for the position, preferably not more than three years old. Research topics of interest span from distributed systems fundamentals to Grid and Cloud Computing infrastructures, virtualization technology, and their academic and industrial applications, including, e.g., eScience applications. Industrial experience is also considered highly valuable. Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English are required.

3 PhD students
Dnr: 313-247-10

The positions are aimed for PhD studies and research to be performed jointly with group members and collaboration partners, leading to a PhD degree. The positions include a competitive salary for a period of four years of research time, provided that expected study and research results are achieved. The positions may also include part-time work (up to 20%) as teaching assistant. If so, the total time for the position is extended accordingly (up to a maximum of five years).

Prerequisites include either (i) 240 ECTS credits (swe. Högskolepoäng) of higher education studies of which 60 should be on an advanced level (Master level) in computing science or similar relevant field, or (ii) 120 Swedish (old) credits (swe. Poäng; corresponding to 180 ECTS credits) of higher education studies if they were taken before July 1, 2007 or equivalent competence. In addition to excellent study results, excellent programming skills are required. Industrial experience is also considered highly valuable. Good communication skills in written and spoken English are required.

2 Systems developers
Dnr: 316-248-10

The positions are aimed for research-oriented software development, mainly in large-scale international projects. Aimed to complement the group’s research activities, the positions are intended to support the development of complex computer systems produced by the research projects, e.g., by extending on research prototype software developed by researchers. Coordination of software development activities with international partners is an integrated part of this work and additional coordination tasks may be included. The positions are for two years and include a competitive salary.

Applicants are expected to hold an MSc degree in computer science or a related field. Excellence in systems development, software engineering practices, and proficiency in modern programming languages and software development tools are expected. Experience from large-scale software development, development in distributed projects, and open source environments are considered highly valuable. Industrial experience is a merit. Personal skills for coordination and organization of distributed system development are important. Good communication skills in written and spoken English are required.
