Umeå universitet

Umeå University - with its 33,000 students and over 4,000 employees - is an organisation in constant change and development. Umeå University conducts groundbreaking research within several areas - several in which we are among the best in the world - within others regarded as the leaders in Sweden. We are one of Sweden’s largest providers of education and offer a broad and attractive range of courses and programmes. Our campus constitutes an inspiring environment for everyone that studies and works here. We wish to co-operate with companies and organisations throughout the Umeå region and all over the world.

Postdoctoral position
in muscle development

at Umeå Centre for Molecular Medicine (UCMM). UCMM is an interdisciplinary research centre using basic research approaches to study areas of biological and medical relevance. See www.ucmm.umu.se.

The Postdoctoral position is for maximum two years. Applicant should have received a Ph.D no longer than 3 years before the end of application date. Admission as soon as possible after agreement.

The aim of our research is to gain knowledge about the mechanisms behind muscle development, and how different cell types are specified during muscle differentiation in vertebrates. To gain knowledge about basic mechanisms behind muscle specification is important in order to understand how muscle cells become allocated to a certain fate, and will increase the knowledge about the regulation of muscle patterning during embryogenesis. The zebrafish is ideally suited for the genetic analysis of regulatory processes of vertebrate development and is used as a model system. The goal is to determine how specification of fibre types occurs and how this is regulated at a molecular level in the zebrafish. In the future this may also contribute to increased knowledge about the pathologies linked to muscle cells.

The successful applicant will be responsible for generation and analyzes of transgenic zebrafish lines. This includes generation of DNA constructs and microinjection. A thorough theoretical and practical grounding in molecular and developmental biology is warranted. Experience in muscle development and in generating and maintaining transgenic zebrafish is an advantage. The applicant should be proficient in written and spoken English and have good organizational, record keeping and problem solving skills.

A completed application for the position should include:
1) A single page (A4) describing your research interest, experience and suitability for the position.
2) Curriculum Vitae
3) Names and contact information of 3 referees together with copies of relevant qualifications.
